Trust and cross-border cooperation: keys to the future of Lake Titicaca as a link between Peru and Bolivia
On Thursday 25 November, the bi-national Lake Titicaca Authority organised a public meeting attended by authorities from Peru, Bolivia and experts in cooperation between Latin America and Europe. Virtually all the participants agreed on two issues: the critical situation of climatic and socioeconomic vulnerability in which the region finds itself and the need for trust between the different actors that have an impact on it. “Titicaca unites us, it has to be treated with respect and specific actions,” said Juan Ocola Salazar, director of the Lake Titicaca Authority.

From 15 to 19 November, a team of EUROFRONT border and anti-trafficking experts visited Bolivia. Various authorities from the Foreign Ministry, the Interior Ministry, the Directorate of Migration, the Bolivian Police and the Ministry of Justice, among others, confirmed their commitment to cooperate in order to improve development and security in Latin America. Bermejo-Aguas Blancas, the border between Bolivia and Argentina, was one of the main workplaces during the week.
Through the IOM and together with the Ecuadorian Interior Ministry, EUROFRONT promotes monitoring and registration systems on human trafficking and migrant smuggling
Within the framework of Component II of the EU-financed EUROFRONT project, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and in coordination with the Interior Ministry of Ecuador through the Directorate for the Prevention of Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling, the Manual for the Use and Handling of the Monitoring System for the Management of Trafficking in Persons and Migrant Smuggling (SISEGETT) was developed, as was and the System for the Registration of Victims of Trafficking in Persons and Migrant Smuggling (REGISTRATT).
The government of Ecuador and EUROFRONT analyse the country's challenges regarding cross-border security
From 11 to 15 October, the government of the Republic of Ecuador received a delegation from the EUROFRONT team, a programme financed by the European Union, in order to hold meetings with government authorities and visit the Rumichaca border crossing. This crossing is located between the cities of Ipiales, Colombia and Tulcán in Ecuador and was designated as a pilot location for the development of this programme.
